June Bird Walk - Korth Park

We couldn't have asked for better weather for our June walk at Korth Park. Mellow temperature, blue sky with a few clouds, a pleasant breeze. Just about perfect! We walked in the prairie, enjoying birds, prairie flowers but very few butterflies and dragonflies. We were surprised by how few of both there were. However, there were many birds to keep us interested and that was the main reason for being there. Probably the most fun for everyone was watching the Osprey family of two adults and three (!) chicks. They were easy to see and put on a show for us.

Jefferson-Dodge Birding Walk led by Brad Webb and Karen Etter Hale, with 6 attendees, mostly from the Lake Mills area. Walked from the Elm Point parking lot clockwise up through the prairie (many blooming prairie flowers!) to the upper shelter, where a family was flying a large Toucan kite. Made our way down the paved trail to the lake, then along the lake past the Osprey platform (parent with THREE nestlings!) and back to the Elm Point parking lot. Saw only a few butterflies, a single dragonfly, 1 E. chipmunk (in a mulberry tree); heard one 13-lined ground squirrel and single bullfrog. It was a lovely morning to be out. 32 species (+1 other taxa) duck sp. 2 2 flying, most likely Mallards. Mourning Dove 4 American Coot 1 Sandhill Crane 2 Black Tern 2 Green Heron 1 Turkey Vulture 1 Flying. Osprey 5 Saw both parents and at least 2 young on the nest platform at the start of our walk (with a scope from the Elm Point parking lot). Later, when we got close to the platform, we saw one parent and at least 3 nestlings.
