April Bird Walk - Dorothy Carnes Park
We start the new season of J/D Walks with our April walk at the west side of Dorothy Carnes Park near Fort Atkinson. Due to unavoidable conflicts on Saturday the 18th, the walk will be next Sunday, the 19th, from 8:30 AM for about three hours.
Dorothy Carnes Park has long been a favorite for our walks. It includes the Rose Lake State Natural Area. This SNA features a seepage lake with no inlet or outlet. That configuration makes for a very calm flat water lake which provides great habitat for waterfowl. There are also areas of woodland, upland, restored prairie and even farmland associated with the park.
At this time of year we should see migrating species and a variety of local species in the different habitats. Migration has really picked up so we should see some interesting migrants.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring binoculars if you have them. We rate the trails as easy, though there are a few hills. Spotting scopes will be helpful.
Directions to Dorothy Carnes Park:
From the intersection of Highways 26 and 12 in Fort Atkinson, go west on 12 1/2 mile, then north on Radloff Lane about 0.6 mile, then east to a parking area. A trail provides access to the lake. Note: The Google arrow on the map points to the State Natural Area, not the parking lot we will be using.
