May Walk

(Photo of Barred Owl ...) May Walk - Northern Road, Horicon Marsh

Today's walk was probably our smallest get-together so far. Only one leader (Brad) was able to make it and no walkers attended. The weather was cold, threatening rain and very windy so we were not surprised. Those who might have thought about coming and didn't missed a wonderful birding session. Northern Road, once you move along a few feet, is shielded from the wind; the rain held off; the cold wasn't too bad with a jacket; and the birding was great. Highlights included guest appearances by a pair of Barred Owls, who kept calling for some time; singing Rose Breasted Grossbeaks everywhere; many warbler species (see list); and along Dike Road I had the Black Necked Stilts so close I could almost touch them. Oh - a family of Sandhill Cranes - Mom, Dad and one colt - walk across the road about 10 feet in front of the car. Baby stopped to have a little snack right in front of me.

As we've said before, you never know what you'll see unless you're there. Wish I could have shared some of today's excellent views with walkers. Hope to do so during the next walk.
