June Bird Walk - SOUTH area of Dorothy Carnes Park
For our June walk, we've scheduled someting we haven't done before. There is a little used set of trails on the south side of Dorothy Carnes Park. They are well worth exploring so let's explore them. There is a small overlook there that affords a better view of Rose Lake than does the one on the west side. Given fewer people use the south overview there are often more waterfowl to be found in this area of the lake. We should also see many different resident species. This is the time of year when we may find a number of challenging juvenile birds as well. There are no facilities at the south side entry point but the west side facilities are only a short drive away so you could stop there first if you wish.
The trails here are well maintained and easy to hike. Wear good walking shoes and bring binoculars if you have them. Scopes should not be needed. We'll meet at 8:30 this Saturday, the 21st. The walk will last about three hours. The forecast is for a warm day. Bringing water is a good idea.
Directions to SOUTH area of Dorothy Carnes Park:
From the west take Hwy 12 toward Fort Atkinson to Hoard Road. Do not turn at the Park sign at Radloff Road. Continue to the intersection with Hoard Road. Turn north. From the east head west on Hwy 12 from Fort Atkinson to the intersection with Hoard Road. Turn north. Almost immediately after the turn there will be a parking lot on the left side of the road. We'll meet there at 8:30 for this walk. The turn on to Hoard Road is almost opposite the "What's the Point" bar. The old "Popular Point" name is still on one wall so you may see that also.
Here's a map showing the location of the park. You may have to zoom in to see the Hoard Road parking lot or click on the "View Larger Map" link to see it.
