July Walk

(Photo of Great Horned Owl ...) July Bird Walk - Zeloski Marsh

The threat of rain kept the numbers down as we held our July walk on Saturday, July 19. The small group of birders who were there had a wonderful opportunity to see one of the newest restored marshes in Wisconsin. There was no rain to contend with, but there were many interesting sights. Besides the birds, we got to see how well the restored prairie area has developed - beautiful vistas were enjoyed by both the birders and a variety of birds. The full list is below.

Among the special moments was the sighting of Bobolinks. This is the first time they've been seen in the marsh, and allowed us to add one more species to the Marsh's total (139 now if I remember right). We also enjoyed an up close and almost personal visit with a Great Horned Owl, something of a surprise. Another treat was an overflight by about 40 American White Pelicans. At least one was fishing on the marsh itself. The restored prairie area, awash with blooms of many different colors, hosted Dickcissels, Red Winged Blackbirds and Song Sparrows among others to serenade us. We spotted many Black Terns flying over the impoundments carrying food, indicating this species is certainly now breeding here. There were a few Forster's Terns keeping them company.

All in all, we had a great walk in a wonderful new birding area. If you couldn't be with us for this walk, we hope you have another opportunity to check-out Zeloski Marsh and can join us for one of the other walks in this series.
